Autumn in Salzburg has a very special magic. As the leaves slowly change color, the air becomes clearer, and the city is bathed in golden light, a time full of customs, culinary highlights, and unique experiences begins. Whether traditional festivals, walks through picturesque nature, or cultural highlights – in autumn, Salzburg shows off its most beautiful side.
Rupertikirtag – living tradition in the heart of the old town
A highlight of Salzburg’s annual events calendar is Rupertikirtag, which is celebrated every year at the end of September in honour of St. Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg. From 23 to 27 September, the historic Cathedral Square comes alive with colourful fairground rides, traditional costumes, regional delicacies, and handicraft stalls. For many Salzburg locals, this traditional fair is more than just a folk festival – it is a celebration of local identity and tradition in the heart of the Old Town.

Bauernherbst – customs to participate in
Anyone who wants to experience the authentic, traditional side of Salzburgerland shouldn’t miss the Harvest Festival. From August to October, singing, dancing, and, of course, fine dining take place in 76 villages. Regional produce, cheerful music, and festive parades make Harvest Festival an experience for the whole family. Here, you can experience rural life firsthand – with cattle drives, craft markets, and culinary delights.

Here you can find all events in and around Salzburg.
Kapuzinerberg & Hellbrunn – Walks in nature
Autumn is also clearly noticeable in the city itself. A walk along the Kapuzinerberg hill leads past historic walls and through autumn-hued nature – a tranquil spot in the heart of the old town, which unfolds its charm especially at this time of year.
A visit to Hellbrunn is no less atmospheric: The woods surrounding the Monatsschlössl palace invite you to take long walks, while children enthusiastically collect chestnuts in the palace gardens. Those looking for a special experience should visit the famous trick fountains before they close for the winter.

Paracelsus Bad – Warmth & Relaxiation
When temperatures drop and you’re looking for warmth after a long autumn walk, a visit to the Paracelsus Bad & Kurhaus is the perfect choice. The modern sauna area in particular is ideal for warming up, relaxing, and unwinding. Following its extensive renovation, the pool area also invites you to enjoy a swim and some well-deserved relaxation.

Long Night of Museums – pure culture in one evening
For culture enthusiasts, autumn offers another highlight: on 3 October, the Long Night of Museums takes place throughout Austria. With just one ticket, you can visit numerous museums throughout the evening. In Salzburg, visitors can also look forward to a wide range of exhibitions, collections, and special programmes. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discover the city’s cultural diversity.

Wildwochen – autumnal delights from the region
Autumn is also a time for indulgence: Between October and November, many inns in Salzburgerland invite you to their popular wild weeks. Menus feature local specialties such as venison, deer, or chamois, often accompanied by seasonal side dishes such as cranberries, pumpkin, or red cabbage. A feast for all who love regional cuisine.

Salzburg’s autumn combines tradition, nature, culture, and cuisine in a unique way. Whether at the Rupertikirtag (St. Rupert’s Fair) in the city center, the Bauernherbst in the countryside, relaxing strolls, or enjoyable evenings at a local inn – this season offers countless opportunities to experience Salzburg from a particularly atmospheric perspective.
