When the lights come on in Salzburg, the city reveals a different side. From Mönchsberg or Kapuzinerberg, head down to the Salzach before continuing on to the bars of the Old Town. We’ll show you viewpoints, photo spots and nightlife addresses that can easily be combined for a great evening out.
Salzburg at Night at a Glance
- Müllner Steg is a good starting point for city lights and photos.
- On Mönchsberg, you’ll find several viewpoints overlooking the Old Town.
- The Marko Feingold Bridge combines a great photo spot with an evening stroll.
- For bars and clubs, Salzburg’s nightlife is mainly concentrated around Rudolfskai, Gstättengasse/Anton-Neumayer-Platz and Steingasse.

Start with a View: Salzburg from Above
Salzburg offers several elevated viewpoints where you can enjoy the city in the evening light or after dark.
For a photo walk, Müllner Steg is a great place to start. From here, you can enjoy views across the Old Town all the way to Hohensalzburg Fortress. This makes Müllner Steg an especially good photo spot after dark for capturing the Old Town and the fortress. From here, you can continue your walk towards Mönchsberg.
On Mönchsberg, you’ll find even more viewpoints. The Humboldt Terrace is located above St. Mark’s Church. Continuing towards the Old Town, the viewing platform by the Museum der Moderne offers views of Getreidegasse, the Festival Hall and the left bank of the Salzach.
Our Recommendation
It’s best to start your photo tour before nightfall. That way, you can capture both the evening light and the illuminated city in one trip.
What many people don’t know is that you don’t have to venture far from the city centre to get a great view from above. Mönchsberg, in particular, combines panoramic views with easy access to the Old Town.
Photo Spots Between the City Hills and the Salzach
From above, you get the full panorama, while down by the river, individual landmarks come into sharper focus. From the Marko Feingold Bridge, for example, you can capture the Salzach, the Old Town and Hohensalzburg Fortress in a single shot. The Marko Feingold Bridge, still known to many by its former name, Makartsteg, connects the two sides of the Old Town.

Kapuzinerberg also deserves a place on the list of photo spots. From there, you can look out over the rooftops of the Old Town towards Hohensalzburg Fortress and across to Mönchsberg. The climb is especially worthwhile in the evening, when you can enjoy this view in the city lights.
This gives you three different types of photo opportunities for one evening:
- City and Fortress from Müllner Steg
- Elevated Views of the Old Town from Mönchsberg or Kapuzinerberg
The Salzach and Old Town from the Marko Feingold Bridge
Our Recommendation
Don’t plan five or six photo spots in a row. Two good locations are enough for one evening. After that, you can put the camera away and simply enjoy the rest of the night.
Later in the Evening: Salzburg’s Nightlife
After taking in the views and photo spots, continue your evening in the Old Town. For nightlife, there are three areas worth remembering: Rudolfskai, Gstättengasse with Anton-Neumayer-Platz, and Steingasse.
Along Rudolfskai, you’ll find bars and Irish pubs close together. If you want to turn a drink into a night out at a club, Gstättengasse around Anton-Neumayer-Platz is another good option. Steingasse is also part of Salzburg’s nightlife scene.
So, there’s no need to decide on a specific venue in advance. Instead, see what you feel like that evening – a drink, a pub or perhaps a club later on. You’ll find specific recommendations in our dedicated bar guide.

Our Recommendation
First the Views, Then the Old Town. Take some time at the start of the evening to explore Mönchsberg, Kapuzinerberg or a photo spot along the Salzach. Afterwards, you can simply see where the night takes you – perhaps for a drink at Rudolfskai or later on towards Gstättengasse.
Summer Evening or Winter Night
The time of year mainly affects the order of your evening. The amount of available daylight plays an important role when visiting viewpoints and photo spots.
In summer, you can plan the start of your evening around the late evening light. In winter, the photography part of your evening will need to begin earlier. Exact sunset times vary depending on the date and time of year, so it’s best to check them for your visit.
The next step
Salzburg at night is just one side of the city. If you’re staying for a whole weekend or longer, you can spread viewpoints, the Old Town and cultural highlights across several days at a relaxed pace. Our suggestions for 48 and 72 hours will help you plan your stay. And if the weather doesn’t cooperate, there’s still plenty to discover indoors.
