“Bon Voyage” – That’s the theme of this year’s Whitsun Festival, taking us from the French countryside to the Mediterranean.
And so, from May 22 to 25, artistic director Cecilia Bartoli takes us on a journey.
From the festival city of Salzburg, our first stop takes us to a province in France, to the city of Reims, to ten performers who are unfortunately stuck in a hotel.
The play “Il Viaggio a Reims” by Gioachino Rossini features Barrie Kosky’s new production, in which we see a highly entertaining parade of characters from all over Europe, entangled in a web of flirtations and jealousy, enthusiasm and vanity, ideals and eccentricities.
The ten main performers are accompanied by the Choeur de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo and Les Musiciens du Prince — Monaco.
Our next trips take us to the sea, where the stories of the Little Mermaid and Odysseus’ journey take us to familiar places.
We are all familiar with the fate of the little mermaid. Freely adapted from Hans Christian Andersen, John Neumeier impressively brings this timeless story to the stage with the Hamburg Ballet. Together with music by Lera Auerbach and accompanied by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, a moving work unfolds.
Our next stop takes us to the Mediterranean Sea, to the legendary island of Ithaca. There, in Claudio Monteverdi’s opera “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria,” we experience the moving end of Odysseus’ long odyssey.
The Compagnia Marionettistica Carlo Colla & Figli gives shape to the characters marked by fate, while Les Musiciens du Prince — Monaco impressively brings them to life with their music.
VOYAGE DE MA VIE – A staged journey through the musical cosmos of Cecilia Bartoli.
With the support of Davide Livermore and his team, Cecilia Bartoli presents a journey through her life and career in a specially designed gala concert. There she introduces the diversity of the wonderful musicians and their works that she has had the privilege of encountering along the way.
On Pentecost Sunday, at the end of these wonderful adventures, we glide “ÜBERS MEER” (across the sea) – the title of the matinee performance by Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata.
A musical journey in the footsteps of Odysseus, Arion, and Tancredi with works by Monteverdi, Cavalli, Durón, Schürmann, and Ghizzolo.
Music from the Italian Renaissance and Baroque periods will be performed, along with works from Germany, Spain, and Latin America, tracing further mythical journeys from classical antiquity. The focus will be on Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, set in Jerusalem at the time of the First Crusade.
