The Stadtgalerie is dedicating a retrospective exhibition to the artist Gisela Katzengruber (1930–2020), focusing on the artistic milieu in which she moved. She was an active presence in the Salzburg art scene from the mid-1990s through the 2010s. Friend and curator Stephen Mathewson is designing the exhibition, drawing on themes of the era and the legendary “Alcatraz” exhibition space in Hallein.

It is an experimental setup implemented within the “shelter” of a gallery, presenting designs—exploring the subject/object relationship—in continuous loops within an ephemeral setting that shifts between playing field, stage, and experimental laboratory.

Panoptikum

The exhibition revolves around the concept of the “panopticon.” On the one hand, this refers to a type of cabinet of curiosities or *Wunderkammer*; on the other, the term originates with the British Enlightenment thinker Jeremy Bentham, who devised a circular architectural layout for prisons that allowed for optimal surveillance. From a central tower-like structure, all cells can be viewed and monitored without any gaps in coverage.

Ulrike Lienbacher
Colors and words, faces and animals

Ulrike Lienbacher, whose work encompasses drawings, objects, photography, and video, explores themes surrounding the regime of rules, norms, and societal constraints, as well as the desire to escape them. A starting point for her new works is the color classification system developed by Abraham Gottlob Werner and Patrick Syme—an early historical attempt at standardization.

Salzburger Spieltanzschule 1955-2022

With infectious enthusiasm, Hamburg-born Sielke Scheidt succeeded in rapidly establishing her “Institute for Education through Dance and Music”—known as the “Salzburg Play-Dance School” (Salzburger Spieltanzschule)—which she founded in Salzburg in 1955. Her innovative approach to teaching dance captured the hearts and minds of countless ballet enthusiasts. Together with her daughter Lacerta, she developed the school into a unique Salzburg institution for people of all ages.
