The Salzburg Festival is the world’s most important festival for opera, classical music and drama. The wide-ranging program includes classics with world-famous artists. The festival also offers young talents a platform to show off their skills.
The programme of the Salzburg Festival 2024
172 performances in 44 days at 15 venues as well as 33 performances in the youth program “jung & jede*r”
Movements between heaven and hell characterize the works of the 2024 Festival summer. They tell of the elemental beauty of the immoderate as well as of the “demonic” abysses hidden therein, of boundless loneliness and the dizzying godless freedom.
Opera
The programme of the 2024 Salzburg Festival has many highlights. One of them is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “DON GIOVANNI”. Don Giovanni loves all women. He accidentally murders the father of his beloved, Donna Anna. The opera is about a lover who violates the prevailing moral concepts, but is also capable of great passion. Leporello, his servant, uncovers the womanizer.
Another highlight is “The Player”, which will be performed for the first time at the Salzburg Festival. It is the first major opera by Sergei Prokofiev to be adapted for the opera stage for the first time.
Spectacle
Since 1920, Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s famous play “Jedermann” has been an integral part of the Festival. The story is about the rich everyman who is called to account by God at the end of his life. With the new head of drama Marina Davydova, we are eagerly awaiting the new production of “Jedermann”. With Philipp Hochmair as Everyman and Deleila Piasko as Paramour.
Another highlight is the world premiere of the scenic reading marathon, which will take place on 17 August. A co-production of the Salzburg Festival and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. Forgotten pieces of Austrian drama are presented.
Concert
The Vienna Philharmonic has set the musical standard for which the Salzburg Festival is world-famous. Traditionally, the Vienna Philharmonic presents five concert programmes in Salzburg: Herbert Blomstedt will kick things off in 2024 with Johannes Brahms’ Song of Destiny and Mendelssohn’s symphony cantata Lobgesang.
Chamber concerts and recitals offer an experience where the audience can focus on the music and interpretations of the artists. Little night music, soloist concerts and Mozart matinees offer the audience the opportunity to experience masterpieces of classical music.
jung & jede*r – The Salzburg Festival’s Youth Programme
The 2024 Salzburg Festival offers a varied programme for music and theatre fans of all ages.
The interactions at the festival are diverse and varied. The everyday life of Anna and Tobias is thrown into disarray in the music theatre piece “Zeitzone JETZT”. Songs by Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Carl Loewe and Franz Schubert, among others, about friendship, love and loss, among others, make the clocks tick faster or slower. The premiere of this new production will take place on 19 July.
There are festival sponsorships in which experienced festival-goers introduce young adults to the world of the festival. The opera camps for children and young people from 9 to 17 years of age are also very popular.
